In October, during routine maintenance, a pipe burst in our building, causing water damage to a portion of the gymnasium floor. As a result, we need to disconnect and move the bleachers away from the gym wall to facilitate repairs. To ensure the work is completed efficiently and properly, we have made the decision to temporarily close the gym to physical education classes and athletic activities. For a very brief period of time, we will only have access to a portion of the gym while “prep work” is being completed, then the entire gym will be closed.
Although we originally requested that the work be done during the summer to avoid disrupting our daily operations, our contractor and insurance company handling the claim have determined that immediate action is necessary to prevent further damage. We understand this timing is not ideal for our winter sports seasons and have arranged for athletic practices to take place at Galloway Township Public School gymnasiums. Additionally, our first few scheduled games will be away games rather than home games. Physical education classes will be relocated or engaged in their health modules.
While we do not anticipate any air quality concerns, the decision to close the gym fully is to address any potential issues proactively and to ensure the repairs are completed as quickly as possible and ensure the safety of our students and staff.
Our district is working closely with the contractors responsible for the leak to ensure they are held accountable for the damages. We expect the project to be completed by the time we return from winter break. Should the timeline change, we will provide an update.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time.
