REBEL
REBEL
is a student led organization with chapters all across New Jersey. Members
work to educate their peers and the public about the dangers of smoking.
REBEL members rose over $500 and walked in the American Cancer Society's
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
REBEL also plans events for the Great American Smokeout held annually in
November. This past school year, they made over 20 body outlines on the floors
throughout the school to stess the deadly nature of smoking. Inside each body
outline was a “Toe Tag” with a fact or statistic about the hazards of smoking.
Another major event is Kick Butts Day which is held annually in March. REBEL
members worked with SADD to sponsor contests and a carnival. Participants played
games with questions about tobacco and smoking. Winners received gift cards,
t-shirts, Frisbees, hats, backpacks, and other items. As part of Kick Butts Day,
R.E.B.E.L. members also performed a cigarette butt clean up of Absegami school
grounds.
Absegami REBEL members have also attended summits with other Atlantic County
REBEL groups, a state-wide Six Flags summit, parades, bowling nights, movie
nights, and Fuzzy Friends. Fuzzy Friends is held at the Build-A-Bear workshop in
the Hamilton Mall. Members make bears which are donated to children with cancer
or children of parents with cancer.
Past Accomplishments
- REBEL members helped to pass the recent changes in New Jersey's smoking laws which made it illegal to smoke in most public places.
- REBEL played an integral part in making NJ casinos smoke free.
- Project 1200: collected over 1200 pairs of shoes which were put on display along with messages, statistics, and facts at the Shore Mall to represent the number of people who die daily from smoking related illnesses.
- Raised over $500 for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
- Make bears at the Build-A-Bear Workshop to donate to children with cancer.
